What is a thesis


A "thesis" or "dissertation" is that it demonstrates the writer's investigation of his work and its results. It is also related to scholastic research or specialized prerequisite. "Thesis" is a Greek word that means that "something put forth" and it is also related to the academic intention. "Dissertation" originates from the Latin that means "Discussion". The term "thesis" for the very first time is being used by Aristotle. Aristotle defines it as "A thesis is a supposition of some eminent philosopher that conflicts with the general opinion for to take notice when any ordinary person expresses views contrary to men's usual opinions would be silly".

Aristotle defined the thesis as a hypothesis that is contradictory to the common belief, and it has a contradiction with all other theorists. A theory is a view or opinion that depends on the substantiation or the testimony that is being accessed. The main principle of the thesis is to illustrate the writer's views and to explain why his/her views are different from others.

Purpose of a Thesis

Together for the verbal or printed, the main aim of the thesis is to express the ability and the talent of the researcher and to illustrate the educational statement or purpose. A "thesis'' is academic research that shows the authors' abilities and expertise in his/her subject and the talent to develop his or her views regarding any topic. Every document in the world always obeys specific rules and defined structure. Thesis also follows a predefined and definite composition. A thesis may be theoretical or empirical, or it can also have both theoretical and practical sections

  • Cover page:

The title should be as such that it should provide us information about the topic. Moreover, it should be related to the topic and the table of contents that are provided for the thesis

  • Abstract:

 An abstract is only compulsory for those who are giving a thesis for the master’s degree. An abstract offers the readers a general idea of the contents that are provided in the thesis. An abstract also enlightens us with the most essential part of the thesis that is the conclusion

  • Contents of the thesis:

Contents contain a heading at the top that is CONTENTS. It is written in bold letters to make it look like a heading and make it look different as compared to the data written below it. The structure of the thesis is given in the table of contents, and the table of contents contains headings and subheadings that are written in the thesis. In each of these chapters, there must be two subchapters. The chapter levels should not be more than 3. References and appendices are not labeled as chapters. Figures and tables have their own contents in the preliminary pages. 

  • Introduction:

 Chapter one has a goal which is to direct the readers to the main topic of the theme and the theme itself. The first chapter should also be like this that it may make it interesting for the readers. Introduction in proper order contains the following:

  • Description of the research topic

  • Research topic's background 

  • Research purpose 

  • Research study's motivation 

  • Problems of the research

  • Research questions

  • Relationship with previous research

  • New values added to previous research

  • Research method's description 

  • Data description

  • Road map.

In the master’s degree thesis, the introduction may be too long that it takes several pages. So, to tackle this situation chapters and sub-chapters are necessary

  • A framework of the theory:

The part of the approach in the research paper is not a chapter, but it has its value on which the researcher builds his or her research. It develops the argument on which the whole research paper consists. Following issues are understood in this section

  • The key terms, concepts, and their definition

  • It describes the phenomena of the theory, procedures for the research study.  

  • Description of frameworks of thesis that may be conceptual and theoretical

  • Review of researches done in the past

  • Relation of an argument with the provided study

  • Definition of investigation or hypothesis to be tested

  • Description of data being used and the research methods' selection.  

  • The research study's explanation should be according to the topic statement. 

Data Analysis 

Data analysis plays the most crucial role in the thesis. It contains all the information of research and the results that we derived from it

This section can have many chapters and can have their structure in many ways

This chapter begins with the purpose of the thesis and the goal that we would like to achieve

  • Appendices:

Appendices have information that is used to clarify the text. Appendices are also the place for questions that take up too much space questions like mathematical solutions. Appendices should be numbered accordingly.
