What is a thesis

Introduction

A "thesis" or "dissertation" is that it demonstrates the writer's investigation of his work and its results. It is also related to scholastic research or specialized prerequisite. There are many circumstances where the word ''thesis" is being used as for graduates level and the word "dissertation" is being used for the PhD level degree, whereas there are some opposite views in this regard. While sometimes for bachelor and PhD "Graduate thesis" is being applied.

There is a circumstance in which the type or quality of the research study differs, it may depend upon the country that is which country or university or on which program the research is going to be conducted. It is also related to the time limit that is being given to the researcher for the completion of his/her work.

To illustrate a discourse that is not related to the educational degree, the term ''dissertation" is being used. While for the generally a composition or an article the word "thesis'' is being used.

"Thesis" is a Greek word that means that "something put forth" and it is also related to the academic intention. "Dissertation" originates from the Latin that means "Discussion". The term "thesis" for the very first time is being used by Aristotle. Aristotle defines it as "A thesis is a supposition of some eminent philosopher that conflicts with the general opinion for to take notice when any ordinary person expresses views contrary to men's usual opinions would be silly".

Aristotle defined the thesis as a hypothesis that is contradictory to the common belief, and it has a contradiction with all other theorists. A theory is a view or opinion that depends on the substantiation or the testimony that is being accessed. The main principle of the thesis is to illustrate the writer's views and to explain why his/her views are different from others.

Purpose of a Thesis

Together for the verbal or printed, the main aim of the thesis is to express the ability and the talent of the researcher and to illustrate the educational statement or purpose. A "thesis'' is academic research that shows the authors' abilities and expertise in his/her subject and the talent to develop his or her views regarding any topic. While doing research, the author's repossession talent is being expanded, and the resolving of troubles the ability to argue is being reinforced, and all these talents are being helpful for future success.

In academic research, the main aim of the research is to have a novel viewpoint for the research study. While writing a Master's level thesis, the researcher may already have familiarity with the conventional educational research thesis, so it helps the researcher to have a concentration on the main topic of the research. The practice of doing a Master's level thesis, it increases the talent of the researcher to collect new information, to investigate and formulate an ending of the knowledge and the expertise to build further technical details. It is a technique to demonstrate the ability that at what extent you have command on the given topic.

Developing a Research Thesis

There is no difference in characteristics between the research and no research thesis. The main distinction between these two lays in the resource of the data collection the authenticity of findings and the conclusion of the research study. It also depends upon the researcher's perspective of thinking on the related research. The thesis study, data collection, and data analysis and all the aspect and material in doing research should be the researcher, and there is no imitation acceptable in this regard. The research paper illustrates the researcher's thoughts and beliefs. It is based on a limited topic and not tries to broaden the research in any field.

The researcher formulates his or her views and information regarding the thesis to make it more effective. It must show the researcher's argumentation, and it specifies the researcher's viewpoint for their standpoint:

For the managers and the workers, the management that is based on the competence of the workers and managers is being helpful and consistent.

It is stated that a research thesis is the researcher's planned and projected answers to the research questions that are formulated the research that is being finalized after doing the research study.

It is an important and valuable research talent of the researcher to have developed an excellent working thesis that is just like building research questions and objectives of the research study, and they are not too much narrow down and not as broad they have a moderate state.

The Procedure for writing a thesis

The thesis or research starts with the selection of the topic. First, the research topic has to be selected, and then the researcher has to have converse on the topic with his/her supervisor. The topic for research can be selected from any area of the subject field. A researcher has to get a common belief of the topic and then have to briefly study the journals of the related research. Then the thesis that is being related to the researcher's topic has to be thoroughly studied.

The researcher may have a choice to choose a research topic on their own choice. There are many characteristics of choosing research topics:

  • Researchers' concentration for the topic

  • Knowledge, skills and talent of the researcher

  • To have the accessibility of the basic stuff

  • To have access to the information

  • Significance of the topic as a scientifically point of view

  • Common socially awareness relating to the topic

  • To know to what extent the topic of your research contributes to your future career.

After the selection of the topic and gaining confirmation to your supervisor, the very next pace is to have the general acquaintance with the literature of the related research. When the researcher studies the earlier investigations it is beneficial as to

  1. Illustrate the standard views relating to the research topic as in the chosen area of research the modern of the awareness of the art. How much research has been done on it? Who researches these fields? What are the earlier researcher's viewpoints? What are the modes that are being used by the previous researcher in the related field? What are the significant results of the previous researchers on a related topic?

  2. Intensifying the essence information

It assists the researcher to know about the literature reviews of the earlier researches. It also helps the researcher to have the knowledge to choose theory on which he/she builds his research study, and the setting of the experimental research is being designed on it.

  3. The expansion of proficiency

It assists the researcher to have assessed the literature reviews of the earlier researcher relating to his topic and the inadequacies in it.

It also facilitates the researcher to find the research problem in his thesis.

To study the earlier researches is the only way to have access to the source material for the research. The catalog of the literature that is arranged by the University's library is a precious way to get knowledge for the research.

The selection of the research topic and the related literature of the research are the fundamental processes of starting any analysis. For the sake of attaining good results from the study and the progress in research and the constricting of the research studies, analysis is essential. It is the necessary process on which the whole research thesis-based. The argument will be useful if the researcher has a deep concentration and keenly focus on the subject area of the thesis.

Every document in the world always obeys specific rules and defined structure. Thesis also follows a predefined and definite composition. It doesn’t matter what the topic of research is and what key factors we would like to include. A thesis contains the following sections that are followed to make it presentable. Following are those sections

  1. Cover Page

  2. Abstract

  3. Contents

  4. Introduction

  5. Main body

  6. Conclusion

  7. References

  8. Appendices

A thesis may be theoretical or empirical, or it can also have both theoretical and practical sections

  • Cover page:

The title should be as such that it should provide us information about the topic. Moreover, it should be related to the topic and the table of contents that are provided for the thesis

  • Abstract:

An abstract is only compulsory for those who are giving a thesis for the master’s degree. An abstract offers the readers a general idea of the contents that are provided in the thesis. An abstract also enlightens us with the most essential part of the thesis that is the conclusion

  • Contents of the thesis:

Contents contain a heading at the top that is CONTENTS. It is written in bold letters to make it look like a heading and make it look different as compared to the data written below it. The structure of the thesis is given in the table of contents, and the table of contents contains headings and subheadings that are written in the thesis. In each of these chapters, there must be two subchapters. The chapter levels should not be more than 3. References and appendices are not labeled as chapters. Figures and tables have their own contents in the preliminary pages.

  • Introduction:

Chapter one has a goal which is to direct the readers to the main topic of the theme and the theme itself. The first chapter should also be like this that it may make it interesting for the readers. Introduction in proper order contains the following:

  • Significance of the topic

  • Description of the research topic

  • Research topic's background

  • Research purpose

  • Research study's motivation

  • Problems of the research

  • Research questions

  • Relationship with previous research

  • New values added to previous research

  • Research method's description

  • Data description

  • Important results

  • Conclusion

  • Summary

  • Road map.

In the master’s degree thesis, the introduction may be too long that it takes several pages. So, to tackle this situation chapters and sub-chapters are necessary

  • A framework of the theory:

The part of the approach in the research paper is not a chapter, but it has its value on which the researcher builds his or her research. It develops the argument on which the whole research paper consists. Following issues are understood in this section

  • The key terms, concepts, and their definition

  • It describes the phenomena of the theory, procedures for the research study.

  • Description of frameworks of thesis that may be conceptual and theoretical

  • Review of researches done in the past

  • Relation of an argument with the provided study

  • Definition of investigation or hypothesis to be tested

  • Description of data being used and the research methods' selection.

  • The research study's explanation should be according to the topic statement.

Data Analysis

Data analysis plays the most crucial role in the thesis. It contains all the information of research and the results that we derived from it

This section can have many chapters and can have their structure in many ways

This chapter begins with the purpose of the thesis and the goal that we would like to achieve

After these answers will be given to several questions such as How the research is beneficial for the society? What are the shortcomings and gaps of the research? How reliable are the results and what the limitations that were faced during the research are? What can be the use of the results?

The summary chapter is just like the analysis section, but this time there are no numbers in this. The idea is provided in text

  • REFERENCES:

References are an essential part of the research that gives authenticity to the research thesis. The list of references contains specific instruction

  • Appendices:

Appendices have information that is used to clarify the text. Appendices are also the place for questions that take up too much space questions like mathematical solutions. Appendices should be numbered accordingly.
